She began her college teaching
career at Talladega College, establishing a new journalism program and
teaching both American and British literatures. She has also taught at
The University of Alabama as a graduate teaching assistant.
Saavedra came to teaching after a career as a feature writer for
newspapers and magazines in the Atlanta-Birmingham area, and earned her
way through college writing news and features for Auburn University.
Finishing her Ph.D. in Engish at Florida State University, she has
been awarded two Master's degrees: an M.F.A. in creative writing from
The University of Alabama (1995) and an M.A. in English from
Jacksonville State University (1985). She has completed one novel, Living in the
River, a section of which has been published by Livingstone Press in
an anthology of Alabama women writers. She is currently working on a
second novel.
